Google Expands Mobile-Friendliness as a Ranking Signal

We’ve discussed our responsive designs on our blog in the past, so we’ll try not to get too redundant with this big news. For a long time, Google has made it obvious that mobile-friendly web design is a powerful signal when determining pagerank. Recently, however they come out and made a direct statement about what they’re looking for, and when their changes will be implemented:

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.

This news, together with increasing mobile usage, especially in warmer months means it’s more important than ever to make your site responsive.

What is a Responsive Site?

As a quick recap, a responsive site will change its layout for different screen sizes in order to optimize usability and appearance on different devices. Designing your site with responsive capability means Google only has to crawl one site, making it a more SEO-friendly option than building a separate mobile site or app.
