What is a 301 Redirect?
One of the most important aspects of any platform to platform migration is creating accurate and reliable 301 redirects. A 301 redirect will take traffic from an old URL that is in the SERPS (search engine results pages) to the new URL on the new platform.
Why they are Important
This is important for two main reasons. First and foremost, search engines already have this page indexed. It is important to send the search engine spiders to the new page so that they do not get an error and remove that page from the results, or create a webmaster tools error. Secondly, if a human user finds your website in the search engine results or in a link that was pasted on another site (forums, social media, etc) and decides to click on your link and the page no longer exists its will load a 404 error page. They will most certainly go back to the search results and choose another provider. You lose the sale.
We know ProStores
We have seen poorly executed migrations all too often. It is possible for ProStores to generate URLS in three different variations. Knowing which variation is in the search engine results and writing the proper 301 redirects is critically important. Many providers are not familiar enough with ProStores to create accurate 301 redirects when migrating a ProStores site to another platform. Sometimes both variations exist in the search engine results pages. It is difficult to know which variation to use if one does not have the time to do the proper research. Ask yourself this: How much time is being invested in research if your provider is doing the project for free? Also ask yourself if they have the intimate familiarity with ProStores to determine what to look for from the outset of the project. IntuitSolutions has been working with ProStores since its inception and we are intimately familiar with the variations and how to properly redirect all ProStores URLs to new BigCommerce URLs.
Go with the Experts
When Homestead migrated their customers from ProStores to BigCommerce, many mistakes were made. Many of these sites that were hindered my a poor migration turned to IntuitSolutions to retroactively handle things like 301 redirects and 404 errors; an expensive and monumental task. These merchants suffered tremendously. We would have much rather worked with clients from the onset to deliver a properly executed migration. Please take heed. Choose the best provider for your migration to protect your sales and your sanity.
